Bold, Brilliant Braids: Latvian & Vikkel Braid Embellishments

Wondering how to make those fancy horizontal braids you see on knitted sweaters, hats and cowls? My Choose Your Own Path Hat pattern features these lovely braids as an accent. Let’s take the mystery out of the process and learn how to do two color Latvian Braids as well as one color horizontal braids (Vikkel) as seen in the Easiest Cabled Hat Ever pattern. A lesson on Cori’s 2-color cast-on is also include in this hands-on skill building class where participants start two hats and receive both hat patterns as part of class.
Important Workshop Details:
To begin the homework, you will need 2 size US 8 (5mm) 16-inch circular needles and 2 colors (50 grams, leftovers are fine) of worsted weight yarn in different colors (contrasting 1 light and 1 dark) and 1 skein of worsted weight yarn (100 grams Also, bring 50 grams of a contrasting color and 10 grams of another color One extra US 8 (4.5 mm) 16-inch circular needles (US 6 or 7 work will also work) These supplies will make sense once you've started the 2 hats we will knit in class.
PATTERN – Choose Your Own Path Hat Cast on, (using a main color of your choice in worsted weight yarn), 96 stitches: Adult SM/MED 20” OR 108 stitches: Adult LG 22”; join in the round being careful not to twist, place BOR marker. work traditional one-color K2, P2 ribbing OR corrugated K2MC, P2CC two-color ribbing for 2” or length you prefer for the bottom of a hat band.
PATTERN –Easiest Cabled Hat Ever Cast on, (using a main color of your choice in worsted weight yarn), 92 adult MED 18.5” OR 108 sts: adult LG 21/5” and join to work in the round, being careful to not twist your sts, place BOR marker. Work 2x2 Rib in the Round (K2, P2) for 1.5-2”/3-5 cm, or approximately 11-14 rounds, SM as you come to it each round.
