Friday, April 4, 2025, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM ET
Cori Eichelberger

Cables are one of the most characteristic elements of knitting. Beautiful, thick, warm sweaters decorated with cables are always in style during winter. While cables are beautiful, many knitters avoid knitting them, thinking they’re hard to knit and an advanced technique. Actually, knitting cables is simple in principle. So, let’s make an Owl Cowl or Hat and learn the basic cable technique. We’ll also take a look at cabling WITHOUT a cable needle for those who want to be a bit more efficient.

Prerequisites
Students must be able to cast on, join in the round, knit and purl.
Supplies Students Must Bring

Yarn: 1 skein worsted weight yarn (100g/3.5 oz, 220 yards) I do not recommend a highly variegated yarn for this project, as it disguises the owls. Optional: 6.0 mm beads with large hole (for adding to the eyes)

Homework
 Using US Size 8 (5.0 mm) 16” circular needle and long tail method cast on 110 stitches (for 10 owls). (For a closer fitting cowl, (17, 19.5, 22)” cast on a multiple of 11 sts: (77, 88, 99.) Join, being careful not to twist the stitches, and place marker for the beginning and end of your round.
 RND 1: Purl.
 RND 2: Knit.
 RNDS 3–10: Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 four more times.
 RNDS 11–17: Knit.
 RND 18: *K3, P8; repeat from * to end.
 RND 19: *P3, K8; repeat from * to end.
 RND 20: *P3, K8; repeat from * to end.
